Welcome Back! I hope that everyone had a restful and enjoyable Thanksgiving break. It is hard to believe that we are only three weeks away from Christmas break. Be sure to check the blog frequently (or better yet, subscribe) so that you don’t miss any news.
Math Tutoring: Don’t forget math tutoring on Wednesdays before and after school. This week we will be reviewing least common multiples and comparing fractions and correcting last week’s quiz. We will also try to spend some time reviewing division facts for this Friday’s quiz.
Winter Party: I asked the students to start thinking about what they would like to do to celebrate at our Winter Party. Although this party is typically not given by the room mothers, I may ask for donations of food or for crafts depending on what the students and I decide to do. We plan to talk more about it this week and I hope to have more specific information for you next week. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please let me know.
Division: We will be starting weekly timed division fact quizzes this Friday. I have told the kids that their goal is to hopefully show progress over a period of time. Students that have mastered their multiplication facts and have true understanding of multiplication and division as inverse operations are typically successful with these. As with anything new, it will may take a few weeks for students to show mastery of this skill. I think that one thing that I have learned this year is that multiplication is very much at the center of a great deal of 6th grade math. Please work with your children to review multiplication & division facts as needed.
Fractions: We will be finishing our first unit on fractions this week. I plan to review the first of next week and give the unit test mid-to-late next week. I’ll know a more specific date at the end of the week and will post it on our agenda. The periodic assessments that I have given this quarter have given me a lot of insight into what the students are mastering in this unit.
Congratulations: Tiger Paws to the following students in Mrs. Rasco’s class: Alek, Austin L., Victoria, and Ben. These students have been working extra hard outside of math class recently. They were able to reap the benefits of their hard work with great scores on our most recent quiz. Congratulations to everyone that did well on this quiz!
